# Maintain recoverable backups

Practice ID: 41
Topic: `maintenance` (maintenance: Recurring review, cleanup, permission, and recovery work that keeps a digital life manageable.)
Added: 2026-09-01
Journey entry point: `optimize` (Improve ownership, resilience, privacy, portability, and maintenance across the chosen system.)
Start with: `technical` (technical)
Supports: `recoverable-digital-life` (a recoverable digital life; group: `digital-control` / My data and digital setup)

## Pattern

Important data is not protected until an independent copy can actually be restored.

## Practice

Maintain a resilient backup arrangement, such as 3-2-1, and test recovery regularly. Synchronization alone does not provide an independent backup.

## Start small

Restore one important file from a backup and verify that the recovered copy opens correctly.

## Watch out

Cloud synchronization can replicate deletion or corruption; keep at least one independently recoverable copy.
